Bev Price Team Championships 2010 – Results
On Sunday 28 November five of our students were selected to represent Nottinghamshire at the Bev Price team Championships that were being held at Walsall.
Ethan Ward and Jack Hopewell were selected for one of the two boys’ lightweight teams entered by Nottinghamshire, both were fighting in different pools and on different mats so each team would not have to compete against each other until the knockout round.
Jack and Ethan’s third teammate was Charlie Tongue from Rainworth, the boys had four team contests and had to win three to progress to the knockouts. The team fought really well winning two out of the four matches finishing third; unfortunately this was not enough to see them into the knockout.
Marija was up next with her girls’ lightweight team; her teammates were Emily Hird from Retford and Sophie Townhill from Portland. Like the boys Nottinghamshire had two teams, however this time both teams were in a pool of six, meaning both teams would meet each other during the pool contests.
Marija won all but one of her contests for her team, however Marija’s efforts were in vain as unfortunately her team mates did not fair as well resulting in their team losing all five contests.
Liam Gleeson was our next player on the mat in one of Nottinghamshire’s three heavyweight boys’ teams. Liam’s teammates were Oliver Morrison from Acer and William Penfold from Ryecroft.
They were drawn in a pool of five teams and which meant they had to win a minimum of three matches to secure a place in the knockout, they fought well but only secured one team win that put them in fourth position in the pool.
William Humphreys was also in a boys heavyweight team, his team was in a pool of four and his team managed two team wins which put them through to the knockout. In their semi-final match they were unlucky and lost 2-1 which gained them a Bronze medal.
The final teams of the day to step onto the mat from Nottinghamshire were the Men Senior Kyu grades, in one team William Humphreys and Arunas Beliukevicius were joined by Alfreton teammate Jaden Hewitt, in the second team Isaac Scothern was joined by teammates Adam Hill from Ryecroft and Paul Newton from Portland.
Isaac’s team were fighting first in a pool of five teams, during the second team contest Paul was injured and had to pull out leaving only Isaac and Adam to continue, this was going to be tough and even though Isaac and Adam battled on they did not manage to win any of the remaining contests and therefore did not make it through to the knockout.
William and Arunas’s team were in a pool of four and had to secure two wins to meet the other semi-finalists in the knockout. They only lost one of their three contests finishing in second place and gaining a semi-final place. In the semi-finals they were against the winners of the other pool, they were unlucky in this contest losing 2-1 to the Pinewood team which resulted in them receiving a Bronze medal.
In total there were ten teams representing Nottinghamshire at this event and they came away with four Bronze medals, which was a fantastic result.
