  • 9th December 2013

Pre-Cadet Champs 2013On Sunday 8 December Ethan Ward and Jack Hopewell represented our club at the 2013 British Pre-Cadet Championships that were held at EIS Sheffield.

This is the ultimate event of the year at which all the top Judoka compete for the title of British Champion and is also a selection event for the following years’ England Squad.

Paul was officiating and therefore club coach Chris Riley and County Coach Jason Dutton took on the job of coaching the two boys at this prestigious event.

Jack was up first in the Boys u50kg category along with 21 other competitors. Jack fought well but eventually lost both of his initial contests the first by a Waza-Ari score after the full contest duration and the second by Ippon hold.

Ethan moved up to the Boys u42kg and there were 16 other competitors in this group. Ethan had a first round Bye and then lost his second round contest by Ippon hold; this meant that he would now fight in the repechage. Ethan battled through the repechage winning the next three contests. The first by a penalty in Golden Score followed by another penalty win after full contest duration and then in the third contest his opponent was disqualified for a leg grab. Ethan was now fighting for a bronze, it was a hard fought contest but Ethan’s opponent eventually took the win throwing for Ippon.

The boys are both are at the lower age of this two year band and we are sure they will work even harder over the next year to improve on these already great performances and results.

Also in action was club regular Charlie Young in the u34kg category where Charlie won all of his contests and claimed the British Pre-Cadet Champion title for 2013.

As a result of their performances Ethan and Charlie were chosen to become members of the England Squad for 2014. This is a fantastic achievement for them both and we hope they enjoy their training alongside the best players in England.
