Double Gold at Senior Kyu Open
On Sunday 24 March, Arunas Beliukevicius and William Humphreys braved the snow and freezing conditions along with 55 other senior judoka to take part in the Nottingham Senior Kyu Grade Open that took place at the Brocklehigh Sports Centre, Nottingham.
Arunas was on first in the -73kg category which was a twin pool of six, Arunas won two pool contests by Ippon throws putting him first place in pool A and through to the knockout. In the semi-final contest he dispatched his opponent quickly with and Ippon in 0.41 seconds and this now secured him a place in the final. The final was a much tougher contest against a competitor who was on holiday in the UK from the US, the contest went the full duration of contest time and golden score without any of the players managing to get a score on the board and was eventually decided by flags in Arunas’s favour.
William was in the -81kg category and like Arunas was in a twin pool of six. William also finished his section of the pool in first place after winning his contests with an Ippon throw and a Choke/Strangle and was now in the semi-final. William continued to fight well and won the semi-final after throwing his opponent to two Waza-ari scores mid-way into the contest. In the final he threw his opponent for Ippon in just over a minute and secured a Gold medal.
