On Sunday 9 June Nottinghamshire staged the annual Nottingham Open competition at the Wildcats Arena. This event is one of the largest events held in Nottingham with over 200 competitors from 49 clubs from throughout the UK competing over three mat areas.

Ethan Ward, Brandon Allsebrook, Jack Hopewell, Connor Tait and Arunas Beliukevicius were representing our club on the day.

Connor was up first in the Boys u12 u30kg category along with 12 other fighters, Connor won his first round fight by Ippon throw and hold, however he lost the next contest and would now have to fight through the repechage for Bronze. Connor battled through the next three contests taking 10 point wins in all of them, this secured him third place and a Bronze medal.

Ethan followed in the Boys u12 u38kg category along with four other fighters in a pool of five. Ethan bulldozed through the group scoring an Ippon win in all four contests securing Ethan first place and a Gold medal.

Brandon was next up in the u12 u42kg category this was a large group with a total of 16 competitors. Brandon won his first two contents by Ippon scores which put him into the semi-final against Reece Flowers-Lane, after a tight contest Brandon was eventually thrown by Reece and Brandon was then moved in the repechage fight for Bronze. Brandon’s opponent withdrew through injury during the bronze match and as a result Brandon secured a third place Bronze.

Jack was our next player to be called to the mat in the Boys u16 u50kg category this was a group of six split into two pools of three. Jack secured one win by two Waza-ari throws in his pool to secure a place in the next round. In the semi-final Jack faced an older and more experienced player and was eventually outmatched which resulted in Jack receiving a well-earned third place Bronze.

The last player up was Arunas, he was in the Men -81kg category in a pool of five. Arunas lost he first contest but then he dispatched his next three opponents by Ippon throws which resulted in a second place for Arunas and a Silver medal.

This was a great high standard event and we are really proud of all our players each securing a medal at this event.
